Enrique Forner knew change had to give a way of making and selling Rioja, with a touch Frenchified that once caused scandal. Today is one of our major exporters and has built a global image of modern rioja.
Marqués de Cáceres had in his 89 Gran Reserva wine portentous, able to break the mold and diminish the quality criteria fossilized. Then, in La Rioja, the color revolution was starting his steps, and just pointed edge winemaking. But Enrique Forner, opinionated and insightful as few knew that the glory is fleeting if the base is not solid wine.
Nothing happens by chance. The success has been preceded by a life of dedication and sacrifice. Forner left Spain in 1936, early in the Civil War. Back in France, was dedicated in the wine trade in the Rhone and the Loire. Heart of winemaker, soon take ownership of Châteaux and Châteaux Camensac Trintaudon Larose in Bordeaux. With the wealth of his successful French experience, he returned to Spain in 1970. And one idea in mind: to adapt their knowledge and quality criteria to the reality of Rioja wine. Ashtray chose to create his winery Marqués de Cáceres, with the advice of Emile Peynaud. Carefully chosen grape suppliers exclusively among their locality. Prices offered to growers very profitable, but in return demanded that were ripe and healthy. He wanted the most modern winemaking facilities with stainless steel appliances. And decided to give their wines aged in new French oak barrels shorter. The success was overwhelming.
Enrique Forner modern rioja achieved, much higher than usual, with a crisp fruity aroma and noble presence of spices and toasted oak better. Well marked path that other winemakers have continued to contribute decisively to the current prestige of rioja.
